Explore Wellington City from Wellington’s Kiwi Holiday Park
Staying at Wellington’s Kiwi Holiday Park gives you easy access to New Zealand’s
capital. In around 30–35 minutes by car or train you can be in the heart of
Wellington City, exploring museums, laneways, waterfront walks and film
locations – then return to our peaceful Upper Hutt base at the end of the day.
Te Papa – Museum of New Zealand
On the Wellington waterfront,
Te Papa Tongarewa is New Zealand’s national museum, with interactive
exhibits on Māori and Pacific culture, natural history, art and more. General
entry is free, making it a must-do for families and first-time visitors.
Wellington Cable Car & Botanic Garden
Ride the historic
Wellington Cable Car from Lambton Quay up to Kelburn for sweeping views
over the harbour. At the top you’ll find the
Wellington Botanic Garden, the Cable Car Museum and Space Place – perfect for
a half-day of easy sightseeing.
Waterfront Walks & Oriental Bay
Wellington’s waterfront promenade links Queens Wharf, Whairepo Lagoon and
Oriental Bay. Stroll past cafes, sculptures and parks, hire bikes or kayaks, or
simply relax on the beach and watch the harbour ferries come and go.
Cuba Street, Laneways & Food Scene
Cuba Street is the city’s bohemian heart – packed with coffee roasters,
street art, vintage shops, buskers and late-night eateries. Nearby laneways
offer hidden bars, dessert spots and some of Wellington’s best casual dining.
It’s a great place to experience the city’s creative café and craft-beer
culture.
Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne
Just minutes from the CBD,
Zealandia ecosanctuary protects a predator-fenced valley where native
birds such as kākā, kākāriki and tīeke thrive. Day and night tours are
available, and it’s easily reached via free shuttle from the top of the Cable
Car.
Wētā Workshop & Film Locations
Over in Miramar you can step into the world of movie-making at
Wētā Workshop, famous for its work on The Lord of the Rings and many
other films. Guided tours and hands-on experiences show how props, creatures
and costumes are brought to life – a highlight for film fans of all ages.
Wellington Zoo & Wildlife Experiences
Wellington Zoo is New Zealand’s first zoo and home to native and exotic
animals, with close-up encounters and conservation-focused exhibits. For more
wildlife, you can also join seal-coast tours or visit nearby islands such as
Matiu/Somes on a harbour ferry.
Views from Mount Victoria & City Walks
Drive or walk up to the Mount Victoria Lookout for 360° views over the
city, harbour and hills – especially beautiful at sunset. In the city itself,
the City to Sea Walkway and town belt trails offer green escapes without
leaving Wellington.
Parliament, Tākina & City Museums
Tour the iconic Beehive and Parliament Buildings, visit
Wellington Museum on Queens Wharf, or check out events and exhibitions at
Tākina, the city’s modern convention and exhibition centre opposite Te Papa.
There’s always something happening in the capital.
